There are a few things that are important while optimizing a web page to achieve high rankings.

Lots of people argue if Page Rank is important in search engine results. One thing is clear: it *does* have some effect on page's position within the results. Therefore it's crucial tu do anything to raise the PR as much as possible.

In SEOmoz.org, there is an article named "Search Engine Ranking Factors".

The author says:

This article contains a large list of the factors that can influence a web document's rank at the major search engines (Yahoo!, MSN, Google & AskJeeves) for a particular term or phrase. Although it is impossible to say for certain which of these items affects which search engine or how important the factors are individually, I've created an estimated ranking importance scale< …>

As you can guess, it's something like a small research. The author asked 13 people for their opinion what factors are important to search engine page rank.

There are 4 categories in which people checked the most important factors for high rankings:

In-document (on-page) factors that affect ranking

Factors that affect the link value

Factors towards hosting, technical and URL

Factors of detrimental ranking

From these categories, the respondents agreed upon 10 most important things that have a great impact on the ranking:

Title tag

Links anchor text

Keyword within the text of the document

Document accessibility

Internal linking

Site primary subject matter

External linking

Link popularity

Global site link popularity

Keyword stuffing

Although this is not a 100% guaranteed information, as the survey was made questioning not too many people, our experience shows the data does make sense. After all, you never lose anything to try improving your site in all ways.

"Per aspera ad astra".

XHTML is a contemporary and convenient way to improve your website‘s look in front of Search Engine robots‘ eyes.

This is because XHTML leaves the site code quite clean and clear if compared with normal HTML. The robots value readability.

The more unnecessary things there will be, the more difficult for robots the text will remain to understand.

What else is obligatory for improving your website? Headings. Of course. You can style the sub-headings from H1 to H6. The thing you cannot forget is to use keywords in headings, or else there will be no use of improvements. Styling H1 with CSS, you will reach the design effect you want: a better readable website.

There's been a bit of hassle about XHTML. What's that and how is it related with SEO?

XHTML is an abbreviation for the term of Extensible Hypertext Markup Language. It can be considered the new part of HTML and XML. The pages made with XHTML look the same as made with the classic HTML, but they are based on XML in general and have most of its advantages.

The next question would be „what are those advantages of XML and why is it good to use this language for web sites?“. The answer would consist of a few main points:
1.	XHTML is extensible. This means that it‘s much easier to make changes in this language than in HTML.
2.	XHTML is portable and interoperable. This language can be used in different portable devices with displays, e.g. cell phones, PDAs, etc.
3.	One can use any XML tool to change or adjust Web documents.
4.	Documents made with XHTML are more accessible. They tolerate screen readers better than HTML.
5.	What is recommended for HTML, it‘s often obligatory for XHTML. This makes XHTML better and more reliable than HTML.

After all, HTML with all its components, helps increasing the quality of a website and raising its positions to the top results in the Search Engines.

A few tips how to make the search engines notice your website and raise it to the top results.

Some websites are seen in search engines, some are not. Why is that so? Why do some stylish sites with compelling texts, offering high quality products aren't visible, while some much worse ones are in the first positions?

This is not a question of luck, in most cases. This is a question of technical architecture. For technical SEO, there are a few points that should be mentioned:

Analysing the site structure. This means checking every page of the website and watching if some pages are seen by the search engine spiders better than other ones.

Checking the URLs. They should not be complex and not understandable.

Checking the HTML code. It should be clean and structured. Spiders should reach it and find the content.

It's very important to have a search engine-friendly website. It helps promote it and keep it visible. Try it!
